 Care

Treat your horsehair bracelet like fine jewelry.   When you wear your bracelet next to other jewelry or watches, be aware that the horsehair may fray.    Remove your horsehair jewelry when washing or bathing, the horsehair will accumulate soap residue and become dull.    Be careful to not wear your horsehair jewelry when you may snag the horsehairs.   Return to top.

 Cleaning

You may clean your horsehair jewelry by using your regular shampoo and gently, using a very soft toothbrush, cleaning the horsehair.    Do not let it soak for more than 10 minutes.    Rinse thoroughly and gently pat dry on a towel.    Let air dry.    Do not dry with a hair dryer or heater.    Return to top.

 Frayed Hairs

If any of the horsehair becomes frayed, you can trim the stray hair with a nail clipper.    Carefully clip the hair as close to the braid as you can.   If more than a few hairs are becoming frayed, then there is a problem with the care of the jewelry.    Please treat horsehair jewelry like fine jewelry.   Be aware that wearing the jewelry next to other jewelry can fray the horsehair.    Wearing the jewelry where the hairs can snag, will damage the jewelry.    Return to top.

 Gathering Horsehair

For a bracelet, we need about 20 inches of horsehair and about 200 hairs.    Collect the horsehair by carefully grasping the longest hairs (or those at least 20 inches long) and whisking away the shorter hairs.    Cut the hair close to the tail bone.    This technique works best if you do it in sections and work close to the tail bone.    That way you can collect the hair without it being obvious.   200 hairs is smaller than the diameter of a pencil, so you don't have remove much from your horses tail.    Just be sure the hair is long enough.    Gather the hair together and secure with a rubber band (a braiding band is good) or a soft string.    Carefully loop the hair and put it in a zip lock bag with a label including your name and the name of the horse.    Seal the bag.    We will not process hair that is tangled, matted, or excessively dirty.    Please note that hair that has Show Sheen or some other like product will have to be cleaned again.

Shorter lengths of hair can be worked with, contact us to discuss options.

All unused hair will be returned with the completed piece of jewelry.

 Measuring for a Bracelet

To measure your wrist for a bracelet, use a flexible tape measure.    Use the tape to measure how long you would like your bracelet to be in inches.    We will use the measurement you send us as the length of the bracelet.    A typical woman's bracelet is 7 1/2 inches, a man's bracelet is usually 8 1/2 inches.   Return to top.

 Mane Hair

Yes, we braid with mane hair!    Mane hair is much finer and shorter than tail hair, making it more diffcult to work with.   A minimum additional $30 fee per braid applies to mane hair.    For another option, mane hair can be used with the resin pendant.    Contact us for details.  Return to top.
